Toussaint Louverture is a Haitian hero-considered a founding father of the nation. He was of royal blood, the first-born son of a West African prince. Toussaint was nearly 50 years old at the start of the slave rebellion of 1791 and initially allied with the Spaniards of neighboring Santo Domingo. He demonstrated strength in military leadership, strategy, logistical operations, and battle-going on to train a lethal fighting force and winning many battles against the French Colonial Army.
