This volume in the series The Navy in the Civil War describes the naval operations from Cape Hatteras to Cape Florida along the coasts and within the sounds, rivers and harbours of this area. Daniel Ammen, Naval Officer, was born in Ohio, 15 May 1820. He was appointed midshipman 7 July 1836. In 1861, at the outbreak of the civil war, he was executive officer of the North Atlantic blockading squadron. At the reduction of Port Royal, 7 November 1861, he commanded the "Seneca," and was sent ashore
