José Pedro Guiteras studied natural sciences at Sevilla. He developed his work as a historian and teacher while always under the threat of the colonial authorities. He was charged and convicted in 1849 for being a member of the party of Narciso López. In 1847 he wrote his meritorious work entitled  Influencia de la mujer en la sociedad cubana , which discusses the state of women's education and a means to improve it and extend it..
