This memoir grew out of the desire to share a life which has been richly blessed, often in unexpected ways, with my family and friends. Moreover, I believe it may speak to those who are eager to explore and engage the world around them. I was nurtured by an enthusiasm for learning, a love of travel and a respect for public service. I was inspired by my parents and grandparents (especially my grandmothers). And I benefitted from an extraordinary mentor, Chester Bowles, who introduced me to India
