Growth of a Megacity

Jakarta, one of the largest metropolitan areas in Southeast Asia, has grown from 150,000 residents in the first half of the twentieth century to more than 31 million residents in 2024. This tremendous population growth and the expansion of the urbanized areas have created several challenges as well as exposed the role of planning in shaping and managing the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA), also known as Jabodetabek. This edited volume argues that Jakarta exhibits several features of “post-suburb
